Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Hugh D — 13 May 2012
The brilliance of Sexy Beast is in being the polar opposite of what you expect a gangster film to be. It has this nervy, unsettling tone which is quite unlike the usual narrative of the genre and while dominated by Ben Kingsley's venomous portrayal of an underworld recruiter (Ghandi this aint), Ian McShane's ice cold kingpin is just as (if not more) terrifying, while Ray Winstone shows us why despite his fearsome image he is known as the nicest guy in acting with the central role of the bruised ex-safecracker.
