Review of Sexy Baby (2012) by Christine H — 04 Jan 2013
After reading the polarized reviews for Sexy Baby, I would like to leave the filmmakers with this phrase, "If nobody hates it, then nobody loves it." So, love it or hate it, the film provokes important questions and leaves the audience in the hot seat of reflection for not only their own image and behaviors but how they see the world they might want to raise their children in.
There is so much honesty in this film. The way it portrays the three women is in no way forced, scripted, or prescribed. It makes each character a hero (and you will empathize with each) while keeping the sticky topic of sexiness as a secondary descriptor. You see it not in how they define each person, but in the choices they make.
This is the biggest triumph of this film. Despite taking sexy pictures on Facebook or being a porn star, you would have to stretch yourself to imagine these women as "whores". While this is a great lesson for a female audience, I imagine this was much more effective for a male audience, who sits on the disproportionate reciprocal end of our sexualized culture (I understand this is a blanket statement, but bare with me.).
A great, thought provoking film that I would encourage anyone (and EVERYONE!) to watch.
