Review of Sex Tape (2014) by Bradley M — 02 Nov 2014
Wanted to like this. You've got a few things in the mix...relationships, technology, etc. But it falls way short for several reasons.
Segel is hard to dislike because he did Forgetting Sarah Marshall which is a fine flick. But he's not been nearly as good in most of his other stuff. In the start of this he's almost creepy as a made-up version of his younger self. Cam Diaz, well we can look at her all day.
So it's a decent premise: married couple is struggling to be intimate and to spice things up they make a sex tape. Instead of deleting it like she requests, it gets uploaded to all these iPads he's given away.
Terribly implausible. First of all, the sex tape is silly and what do ya know, who filmed it? Hate when they dont forget you dont automatically get cool angles unless someone holds the camera up there. Secondly, how convenient that the guy just gives away iPads. The story wouldn't work without that one but doesn't make it any less plausible. And finally, just re-synch the damn thing! I would imagine deleting the video and re-synching would delete it on all the other machines.
But that's not what comedies are about. Instead, this one stretches on into a feature-length movie as the couple tries to track down the iPads. Meh. Maybe could have been salvaged if a less-than-cliche look at sex and marriage, technology and its good and bad, and finally just saying...hey, we had sex and we love each other. No shame in that.
