Review of Sex Tape (2014) by Iain B — 02 Dec 2014
Formulaic, predictable and completely forgettable, Sex Tape is an unnecessary delivery which neither fully explores the abilities of the Jason Segel-Cameron Diaz duo, nor entertains the audience. Based on situational gags it offers nothing that would justify seeing it, apart from losing some time while being on a long flight.
It all goes around a married couple which decides to make their own sex tape, but gets it unintentionally shared online. The premises sound pretty simple, but the first problem that occurs is that it takes way too long for the movie to actually finish its introduction and to come to the funny part. If you eventually do not get annoyed but this fact, you would probably be disappointed by the lack of actual funny moments. Neither the rom-com elements, nor the gross gags which are meant to be part of the movie, are really present in Jake Kasdan's delivery. Even the sexiness which supposedly should be everywhere around Diaz and Segel is missing.
If I try to find something positive in Sex Tape and to recommend it, I need to make compromises with it. The biggest asset of Kasdan's movie, namely the presence of Segel and Diaz, is present, but not fully developed. It is clear that there is no chemistry between them, but when they are apart, they could deliver some laughs on their own. That is actually the only positive thing that I could think of this movie.
In conclusion, Sex Tape could be considered a total disappointment, given its two main leading actors. It could have been much, much better and entertaining. A story which you will hardly remember three weeks after seeing it, Sex Tape is definitely not worth your time, unless you are on a long-distance flight and you have seen all other movies which are part of the on-board movie selection.
