Review of Sex Story: Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) by Abby T — 08 Jan 2016
"Well, at least it's better than the book!" seems to be the only positive comment I've been hearing about this movie, but I disagree. At least the ridiculousness of Ana's narrative, her subconscious, and the sex scenes in the book gave me a good, long laugh (God, I wish I could insert quotes), so I can only speak fondly of it.
I can't say the same for the movie. Summary: it was eh. Slow, drab, with not very much of anything going on. The "kinky" sex scenes? What got this series famous in the first place? Not very kinky or sexy.
Dakota Johnson played the part as well as she could have, I suppose. And since James portrayed Christian Grey as a god walking among men in the book, I think anyone would have disappointed. I'll give Dornan some credit for not being as creepy as the Christian in the book.
So, if you're looking for sexy, go elsewhere! If you're looking for a good laugh, you can go elsewhere too because, as much as possible, Sam Taylor-Johnson removed all the weird in an attempt to make a decent movie.
But the funny thing is, as much as we all ridicule this series, we still read the books, we still watch the movies, feeding E.L. James's pockets and undoubtedly encouraging her work. Sooo that doesn't say very much about us either, does it?
