Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Keenan S — 29 Mar 2018
Sex, Lies, and Videotape is a provocative and compelling film. It's exactly as its title implies, involving a friend who comes into the life of his friend, exposing the friend's fraud in the process.
The friend in question, is a man with impotence (He can't get an erection in the presence of others) who instead films women discussing their sexual fantasies on tape (Such as how he discusses how one woman used 2 minutes of a 3-hour tape, while another woman used 2 3-hour tapes) to get off.
Meanwhile, his friend is a liar who is cheating on his wife with another woman (Meanwhile, said woman discusses her sexual fantasies with the impotent man on tape). It's a strange film, but also one that provides commentary on voyeurism in society (Everyone wants to know who is fucking who), but also in discussing the fallacies that come with some marriages.
Very rarely has a film lived up to its title, but Sex, Lies, and Videotape is a film that does just that. It will deliver exact;y as it promises. This is only a film for adventurous viewers who are up for something that dares to challenge norms and societal conceptions, but if you're up for that, this film certainly scratches that urge.
It's a great film well worth watching for viewers who are not prudes.
