Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Alison P — 31 Jul 2008
Soderbergh origins!
James Spader always brings just enough of the right brand of creepy to his roles. Movies with infidelity themes always upset me, but I found myself able to transcend those obsessions to grasp the bigger picture.
It's true the voyeurism and exhibitionism themes in this movie that made it so provocative and edgy back in 1989 have dulled in the 20 years since its release, but if you can take it for its pre-90s face value (backwards adjusting for inflation), you'll see why this was one of the most talked-about films of the day.
