Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Samuel A — 01 Apr 2009
Steven Soderbergh's feature film debut is nothing short of a masterpiece. The story slowly unfolds, sucking the viewer into the world, ultimately placing the viewer in the character of Graham (James Spader).
In the story, a lawyer (Peter Gallagher) is cheating on his angelic wife (Andie MacDowell) with her sister (Laura San Giacomo). Meanwhile, his old college buddy (Spader) has moved back to town, and it is revealed that he is impotent and videotapes women confessing their deepest sexual secrets.
As a viewer, we are sitting down, watching these people talking about their deepest sexual secrets. The film has fantastic performances by a first-rate cast, superb direction, great cinematography, and great editing.
The music does date the film to the late '80s, but that works in the film's favour.
