Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Matthew L — 20 Jun 2009
Soderbergh and Spader are two of my favorite people in film. Spader has such a way about him. He really gets into his role and becomes it well. I also liked everyone else too. It's interesting how you never really see anyone but these four people.
It really is a rare occurrence to see anyone else in the frame. This is not what I was expecting from Soderbergh. Usually he uses flashy film techniques and jazz music and all that stuff, but he really is much more subtle here.
I ended up really loving it. The music is good too. There is a scene where Gallagher's character first sees his wife on tape and the combination of the music and the videotape is really one of the most haunting scenes I've seen in a while.
