Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Marcus W — 10 Mar 2012
Brilliant character drama focusing on the inter-relationships between four people. At the fore of independent cinema at the time, it holds up with no over the top interconnectivity, focusing instead on the emotional intensity.
Great performances, it is definitely an actor's piece. A film that shows that sexual desire and repression are still relevant issues and the tension is built subtly with camera movement, disjointed silence and great performances.
Interesting focus on 'taping' and it's revealing nature before the phenomenon of the Internet and sharing videos. A film before it's time, one of Soderbergh's best films.
