Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Nick R — 28 Apr 2013
While Soderbergh's idea of conversation being more revealing than sex is an interesting one, I had an awfully hard time investing myself in the four main characters. They were too archetypal for my tastes, and the desire to shroud everyone in layers of lies made it hard to get through to their core.
I will say that Soderbergh completely nails the tone of the film, and there are some great examples of acting that he lets shine through in long takes. But ultimately it's a film of suggestion more than show, and the tease never leads to an equal payoff.
