Review of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) by Jerome K — 11 Nov 2011
Ah, yes, the film that first brought notoriety to the director of such famous films as Ocean's Eleven and Erin Brokovich, Steve Soderbergh. While not as risque and sexually explicit as I first believed, the film is really more about 4 characters supremely acted by Laura San Giacomo, Peter Gallagher.
Andie MacDowell, and James Spader. For a 1989 film, I'm sure the subjects it tackled and the ways in which they were portrayed were more taboo than they are today, so obviously it gets points just for being provocative and innovative.
Okay, so maybe it's been done several times in soap operas, but nowhere nearly as realistic and in depth as in Sex, Lies, & Videotape. The characters were flawed, yet relatable, and the dialogue was very engaging.
The whole film has a very independent feel to it, and its appeal is somewhat limited as not much happens in this film other than lots of talking, so if you like that kind of thing, check this out.
