Review of Sex and the Single Girl (1964) by Quentin J — 30 Jun 2007
The film that inspired Down With Love needed its modern facelift. This screwball comedy leaves much to be desired, as the editing appears unpolished and unmotivated, and its lack of direction makes Bacall and Fonda appear amateurish at best.
The script boasts a number of gratuitous scenes including a 10 minute chase scene that seemingly draws directorial inspiration from Scooby Doo. Perhaps it's my post-feminist era world view, but Wood, who supposedly represents the empowered woman of the 1960s, appears more idiotic than comical in how easily she is duped by a laughably transparent Curtis.
I'd chalk the lack of quality up to the film being dated, but how could anyone laugh at something this bad?
