Review of Sex and the City 2 (2010) by Kristen S — 13 Jan 2011
Heed the warning of the 1-Star.
This one can stand next to GODFATHER 3.
Part of the fun of the SATC series was watching the characters' intuitive ways in which they continuously messed up their love lives. Imagine that dimension gone and replaced with condescending, whining shrews who trot around consuming with a shameless sense of entitlement. Yes, even more so.
Clueless, lazy writing dominates the movie. For instance, a commonly cited example is Charlotte's mothering "dilemma". Charlotte is a wealthy mother who does not have to work for a living. Fortunate enough to have time home, she still requires the help of a full-time nanny, who whisks her children out of the room at any moment the children become too active.
Over a pity party drinking session, Charlotte whines to Miranda how difficult it is to be a mother. She laments: how do "the others" do it without help? Miranda, states blankly, "I have no idea." She then lifts her large cocktail and toasts, "to them." A truly insulting moment to any one, any woman, armed with dignity and a brain. Perhaps King read somewhere that mothering can be tough.
SATC2 is nonsensical and inconsistent. In Abu Dhabi, Miranda scolds Samantha for dressing too revealing at the hotel, although Carrie goes unnoticed sitting next to Miranda in a similar, sleeveless outfit. The script probably looked better on paper. Or, is the audience considered that stupid by Michael Patrick King?
Later, Samantha makes herself readily available on a date. The series-Samantha would have probably reminded herself that she was on a high profile business trip and to take it upstairs. This SATC2 Samantha fellates a hookah for all to see, much to the dismay of the locals. A savvy business woman, series-Samantha would have composed herself with even a little integrity. But, if even the writer of SATC2 can't compose himself with integrity, how on earth could Samantha?
