Review of Sex and the City 2 (2010) by Ruth L — 20 Nov 2011
I think viewers who have traveled and lived abroad, or have been to some other far away place, whether mental or physical, can relate more to this movie. As a fan of Sex & the City, the television series, it was difficult for me at first to remove myself from that bind, of having the expectation that punch lines, life lessons, and themes were going to be packed neatly in a 40 minute segment.
However, the script, for the most part, achieves the goals for this full-length movie format. The characters are who we expect them to be, we are taken on an adventure that's fun, and reflective. My only complaints, though, is that elements in the screenplay could have definitely been fine tuned.
That Carrie-voiceover that fans of the TV series are so accustomed to hearing, where she neatly packages her lessons into a few words, doesn't function quite right in the movie. Also, the relationship the characters have with each other, what impact they make on each other, and how they urk/comfort each other and under what circumstances, could have been tighter.
With that said, though, this movie is a fun adventure with no shortage of dramatic moments that encourage viewers to see that no matter how far away we look, how hard we look, sometimes, what we needed was right in front of us all along.
Further, this movie (not unlike the television show), really pushed the envelope! I mean, it pushes the boundaries by including a gay wedding, signifying the transformation of the meaning of weddings and commitment in our modern society, and unlike most, no, ALL romantic comedies, it really makes a powerful commentary on modern marriage--the juggling the hustle and bustle of work, friends, and lovers.
