Review of Sex and the City 2 (2010) by Rachel S — 11 Apr 2011
Ugh, where to begin? I just watched this last night and there were so many cringe-worthy scenes that I felt like I just wanted to turn it off. I sat through it, however, in the hopes that it would get better - I was wrong. Here's the entire movie:
1. The girls attend an over-the-top "gay wedding".
2. Carrie whines about her marriage.
3. The girls go to Abu Dhabi.
4. Charlotte whines about her kids.
5. Samantha whines about menopause.
6. Miranda whines about Samantha.
7. Carrie somehow runs into her ex IN F-CKING ABU DHABI and cheats on Big.
8. Carrie whines about cheating on Big.
9. They all go back to America and Samantha has Independence Day sex, Charlotte is oh so happy to be with her kids again, and Miranda is... somewhere, it doesn't matter.
10. Carrie has to confront Big, but Big is like "Hey it's whutev, here's a present." The end.
Yup, that's about it. And all throughout that awful storyline, there are about a million puns, two million more puns, and oh yeah, EVEN MORE PUNS. Not to mention an entire scene of the girls singing "I Am Woman." Yeah, the entire song. Not joking.
It's as if the people who decided to make this said to each other, "What should we do for the second movie? I mean, everyone but Samantha is married... how are we going to shake things up?" And out of an entire discussion of ideas and arguing, they came up with some cheap, girl comedy about the joys of being a woman and flaunting your sexuality as much as you possibly can. Also, they must have the idea that there are actually groups of women in the Middle East who are donning designer labels under their burqas. On top of that, the writers agree that those same women would take off said burqas for the disrespectful American tourists in an attempt to show them that they are "on the same side." WHAT? Are you kidding me?
The odds of all of these things happening in real life are astronomical. I'm astounded that anyone could find meaning or significance in this movie.
