Review of Sex and Lucía (2001) by Alex B — 23 Jan 2008
Visually gorgeous and romantic. Some beware the sexual content, which you would never see in an American piece. It's very explicit, but actually adds to both the ambience and the viewers perception of the main character's relationship. You feel the fear of sexual betrayal.
The story skips around a bit, which makes it less obvious and I think it helps you experience each scene in the moment. I wasn't waiting for what was going to happen next as much as I usually am. Except at the poignant end.
Something holds me back from rating this movie even better.. I think it has something to do with the sexuality. It's very open and non-condemning, and that's in regard to more than just boyfriend/girlfriend type situations. Very Europeon.
There's also a certain ridiculousness to how the two main characters meet that the cynic and pessimist in me has a hard time not scoffing at, while smiling and enjoying it at the same time..
A great movie to watch with the person you love.
