3: I have to think that Medem has seen Resnais's "Je t'aime, je t'aime". As far as I can recall - and it has been about nine years since I saw Resnais's film at a packed house at MoMA at the Gramercy Theater - the films have a number of similarities.

I also recall loving this particular film much more when I saw it back in college. I'd say it's a combination of changing tastes and the film not holding up as well to repeated viewings as the best do.

I still absolutely adore the scenes in which the camera sways from side to side as a boat on the ocean would. Never before, as far as I am aware, has this effect been utilized in this matter. I have to wonder how long it took to get it right.

It is particularly effective on a big screen. One issue I had with the picture is that the DVD looked so good, when compared to other DVD's, that I was expecting to be blown away by the Blu-Ray. When this wasn't the case, as one would hope with a film shot digitally, it was a bit of a disappointment.

The film also doesn't seem nearly as sensual or radically sexual after experiencing films like In The Realm of the Senses, Caligula, and The Story of O. Still, it is an excellent picture with a fractured narrative that works quite well, but better the first time or two around than the third or fourth time.

I wish there were more Spanish pictures like it, but I'll take any Almodovar picture over this just about any day of the week.
