Review of Sex and Fury (1973) by Ola G — 23 Jul 2018
Ocho (Reiko Ike), is a gambler and pickpocket in Meiji Era Tokyo. After sheltering a fleeing anarchist, Ocho runs into the three gangsters responsible for her father's murder, each identified by unique tattoos on their backs (a deer, a boar, and a butterfly). A European spy, Christina (Christina Lindberg), arrives on the scene and complicates matters...
"Sex And Fury" has an interesting mix of b-movie violence and soft revenge pornography. The film belongs to the exploitation sub-genre Toei Pinky Violence, which were films made by the major Japanese studio Toei in the early 1970s which mixed sex and violence. "Sex And Fury" has an intriguing revenge plot while swordplay and nudity is more or less the added elements. This film was Quentin Tarantinos inspiration for "Kill Bill" which is quite obvious when you see it. Christina Lindberg looks a bit lost in her role (and to be honest not really an actor), while the Japanese exploitation star Reiko Ike is truly great as the beautiful halfnaked cool sword wielding heroinne. This was the first of two films in which Reiko Ike played the character of Inoshika Ocho.I didn´t know what to expect when I bought this film, but I did like it.
Trivia: According to Christina Lindberg, while on a plane to Stockholm, she was approached by two Japanese men who asked her if she would be interested in working in Japan. Her reply was "why not" and soon afterwards she was in Japan working for Toei. She spent two and a half months in Japan, appearing in "Sex and Fury" and later in a larger role in Sadao Nakajima's 1973 film, "Porno Queen: Japan Sex Tour".
