Review of Sex and Death 101 (2007) by Crissy C — 23 Aug 2008
While this film does have it's moments of comic genius, for the most part writer/director Daniel Waters feels like he's being forced to add his cynical sense of twisted sexual humor he displayed in "Heathers" and "Batman Returns" into the happenings, but when they work they really work.
Simon Baker and Winona Ryder (who is barely in the film except for the awesome confrontation scene in the finale) turn in some fine performances amidst the bizarre goofiness going on here. Some sections, especially in the middle, are a chore and don't work (although Leslie Bibb's part was OK), but whenever Patton Oswalt and his super-computer crew show up the movie screeches to a halt.
I will say one thing about this on/off flick that really put a smile on my face... it was seeing Mindy "Facts of Life's Natalie" Cohn in a prominent role once again. She has a gift for comedy that's rarely utilized.
