Review of Sex and Death 101 (2007) by Andrew P — 25 Jul 2009
This virtually direct-to-video stinker is one of those movies that shows a lot of, then tries to redeem itself with a soggy message. The setup - man gets sent an email of all the women he has and will ever sleep with - is sort of ingenious, but is never milked for all the potential it possesses.
Instead, the first hour of this nearly two hour snoozefest consists of Simon Baker's cad chronologically finding the future conquests on his list and banging them. It isn't until an hour in where Baker has a conversation with three soothsayers in a white room straight out of "The Matrix Reloaded" (don't ask) that the film has a chance to save itself by putting forth some interesting philisophical themes.
It doesn't and the next 40 minutes is just as sloggy. If the movie is remembered for anything it will be Winona Ryder's split second topless scene as photo stills litter the web. Ryder is peppered throughout the film in small doses until the end where she does a pretty good job with a semi-literate speech.
It made me sad that this two-time Oscar nominated actress and Generation X it girl isn't in better movies nowadays. And I don't mean being Spock's mom in the recent "Star Trek" movie.
Why does she have to degrade herself with this muck?
