Review of Severance (2015) by Maciej Z — 18 May 2013
A nicely done, grown up twist on the slasher in the woods formula, involving a group of co-workers on a team-building retreat in the mountains. In place of sexual escapades, the opening concentrates on building a connection with the audience and the "average Joe" characters as well as humorous interactions between them. It nonetheless remains very true to the genre, achieving the feel of paying homage to rather than ripping off its forerunners.
Aging fans of the golden age of slashers will appreciate the familiar setups which suddenly twist to a surprising, often funny outcome when the intended victims react as adults would. The humor in general has been compared by critics, for obvious reason to television's The Office.
