Review of Severance (2006) by Bill K — 06 Jul 2008
After the first twenty minutes or so I was beginning to get pretty high expectations for this genre-bender. Ultimately though the payoff was something of a disappointment. The shift from an interesting little experiment in dark, grisly satire eventually became a chore since some of the common pitfalls of the horror medium became more prominent as the body-count rose--a shame to say the least since the blend began with such pitch-perfection.
The violence almost turned into a distraction and what could have turned out as the much more mature and brainy version of Hostel just became another....well, Hostel (shame on you Eli Roth). But the pretentious send-up of weapons manufacturers and the obvious and condescending 'subversion' (with a blatant and snobbish nudge to Kubrick) by the writers left this picture marred, disjointed and ultimately distracted.
I can only wonder if there were many rewrites at this point...
