Review of Severance (2006) by Gareth M — 15 Sep 2008
There's not much more to this lean, mean survivalist horror-comedy than its pitch of "The Office meets Southern Comfort," but it's a fun, smart, subtly subversive and surprisingly intense movie.
Christopher Smith takes his sweet time establishing characters and setting, and the tone is a little uneven throughout, but it's time well spent. It hurts to watch these likeable people suffer and die.
The film really grabs you with its first shocking injury and then just doesn't let go. This was such an improvement over the director's earlier 'Creep,' which had scads of London subway atmosphere but little else to recommend it.
Like the growth Neil Marshall demonstrated between 'Dog Soldiers' and 'The Descent,' this bodes well for even greater things to come from another delegate of the "new wave of British horror.
" i'm not saying Smith is quite as good as Marshall yet, but he seems to be well on his way.
