Review of Seventh Son (2014) by Steve W — 10 Feb 2015
The movie is incredibly generic, even though it shouldn't be. It has the director of Mongol (2007) at the helm, but it reeks of cliches, banal dialogue, a turgid love story, and over-acting to the extreme by veteran players Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges.
If only Kit Harrington were the main lead, it might improve things, but the movie still stinks. Even Olivia Williams as the mother is stiff, but even worse is the performance of Mother Malkin's sister, the incredibly stiff and stilted Antje Traue.
Her performance is laughable to the extreme. With nothing really quite fitting together, this fantasy film doesn't hit its mark in any one area, except for one incredible shot of two flying creatures battling in the night sky.
The movie needed a lot more of that flair, but instead is a forgettable and bland affair.
