Review of Seven Years in Tibet (1997) by Anton B — 08 Dec 2009
I have not read Heinrich Harrer's original book and I don't know a lot about Tibet, so I can't and won't judge the biographical/historical accuracy of the film. On its own, "Seven Years in Tibet" is more successful as a fascinating view of the Tibetan people and their mystical mountain land, than as one man's spiritual journey.
While the script provides outward displays of Harrer's inner transformation, Brad Pitt is unable to convey much depth to his character's changes. In addition, his Austrian accent comes and goes with his mood and the weather.
In principle, I'm not against substituting English for another language in movies, but this film does so inconsistently and confusingly.
