Review of Seven Years in Tibet (1997) by Gottfried H — 17 Sep 2010
DONNY SAYS: Impressive. Based on true historical account of Heinrich Harrer and young Dalai Lama XIV. Focused mainly on life transformation of Harrer (Brad Pitt) from arrogant self centered mountaineer to become attainer of enlightment after he became tutor and friend of the spiritual leader of Tibet himself.
The movie could not be shot in Tibet due to Chinese government restriction, thus the settings were switched to similar landscape of South American Andes. The Potala monastery was shot in last 20 mins of the movie though, engaging the wrath of China government. Brad Pitt and director Jean Jacques Annud was banned to enter China altogether. The movie was obviously banned in China too.
Overall, this is a very interesting movie despite there were dramatization which Heinrich Harrer himself denied that they really happened.
