Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Colin H — 27 Dec 2010
When you read: 3 hour epic, set and made in Japan, with subtitles and in black and white, you brace yourself for a long haul but in actuality, Seven Samurai is surprisingly engrossing! The story follows farmers who take it upon themselves to finally defend their village from bandits who continually steal their harvest. And go about enlisting a masterless Ronin and six other samurai to help them.
The story weaves some great characters out of the samurai, the first hour being dedicated to their commission. We have a stoic samurai, the mentor and leader, a youth, a drunkard and two jokers. The drunkard obviously steals the show with wild antics which prove to be the correct response in some cases!
The tactical battles which follow are not unlike Zulu (few against many) and with the characters fleshed out, you fear for each of them and wonder who will make it through!
If you have three hours to spend, you should try it out.
