Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by James G — 10 Jan 2011
When bandits threaten a town of impoverished famers, they hire seven samurai for defense and protection. What ensues is a tale of honor, loyalty, and loss. One of the most striking elements of Kurosawa's film is his seven heroes.
Instead of nice neat packaged clichà (C)s we get seven completely unique individuals, some represent qualities of integrity, craftsmanship, and mercy while others come across as foolish, vengeful, and impatient.
Thereâ(TM)s a simple honesty and richness to these characters that we rarely find in film today. Akira Kurosawa's film is on side an epic masterpiece filled with colorful characters, intense action, along with visceral beauty, and on the other side an intimate morality tale of days and stories long forgotten.
