Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Rick R — 02 Jul 2014
Seven Samurai (1954).
This is probably one of the first Samurai movies that I ever saw, so this is the one that I've judged all of the subsequent Samurai movies that came after. Director, Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, and Hideo Oguni wrote an excellent story that has been copied many times.
A poor farm village has been the seasonal victim of bandits, and a villager has seen this group of bandits eyeing the village for a future attack once the rice comes in. Unable to defend themselves, they come up with the idea of hiring unemployed Samurai (Ronin) to fight off these brigands.
A group of the villagers have travelled to a nearby town to enlist skilled swordsmen who are willing to work only for free meals. They find an interested Samurai, Kambei Shimada (Takashi Shimura) with skills and he helps them find suitable candidates.
The group of Samurai train the local farmers to defend themselves for the bloody fight to come. Many of the characters are well written out and it's very easy to root for these people. I highly recommend seeing this classic.
