Review of Seven Psychopaths (2012) by Matt D — 01 May 2013
Even though I missed seeing this in theaters I was very much looking forward to seeing Martin McDonagh's latest flick after falling head over heels in love with 'In Bruges'. Sadly, I could not have been more disappointed with this.
I'm not even sure if I've ever seen a film as tonally confused as this one. On one hand it wants to be hilarious and on another it wants us to be moved and excited by the proceedings but in neither of these departments does it succeed.
Sure, there are a handful of funny moments but for the most part this feels like someone wanting to make a Tarantino film without the slightest idea or smarts on how to do so.
I don't want to harp on the actors too much since I believe most of the fault here belongs to the script and direction, but they don't do the film any favors either.
I will say this though - Colin Farrell looks great and that damn dog is adorable. So there's that.
