Review of Seven Psychopaths (2012) by Toni S — 22 Aug 2013
Martin McDonagh's follow up may not surpass 'In Bruges', but it sure is a good time.
To be honest, for the first 30 minutes I think anyone will start to wonder where the film is actually going. Although everything is stylized and interesting, it is all randomly put together. But I tell you. Just stick with it, as you will be paid off by the end.
This is a very clever movie.
Everything is done for a reason, and at the time may seem pointless, will actually have an effect on the film later on. I really enjoyed it. The film also points out the flaws of the film itself, with some brilliant lines about how the woman characters are lacking, and that animals never get killed. This is where the film succeeds- within it's dialogue and fun nature.
The characters are pretty paper thin, but it didn't bother me that much, as I was having such a good time.
The film definitely slows down in points, which I definitely found a little distracting, and slightly jarring. As the film has such quickly paced moments, that when it slowed down, I was taken out of it a little bit. And Colin Farrell's character was the only one who I wished was a little more developed, as he was the central character that the audience was given to follow. And he is just the Irish alcoholic. Who is a screenwriter. And that is all we know.
Apart from the little gripes here and there, this is a wholly original and imaginative film, that cleverly sticks a finger at the tropes of Hollywood films. It's a great fun time, that sometimes slows down for a breath. And then starts up again.
