Review of Seven Psychopaths (2012) by Harry G — 08 Nov 2013
One can sense that no one was particularly stretching themselves with the production of this film, though given the quality of the cast and crew that's not exactly regrettable. Farrell plays a mostly drunk Irishman struggling with a complicated personal life (not a stretch), Rockwell produces the same sort of lovable id dominated psychopath that made him such a pleasure to watch in 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind' and as Zaphod in 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' (not a stretch), whilst McDonagh has penned a script about an Irish writer fresh in Hollywood after one imagines an unexpected smash hit (a la 'In Bruges') struggling with writer's block for his next film.
However, that being said, the performances are good, the dialogue is fun and there is something strangely cheery about serial killer's getting their comeuppance. It's just all a bit too disjointed and that thin string that held 'In Bruges' to reality has snapped entirely, leaving us in a mad world populated by mad men (and one drunk Irishman).
