Review of Seven Psychopaths (2012) by Ankur B — 29 Sep 2014
Whenever a director chooses to break the fourth wall in his cinematic feature, there is always a calculated risk that has to be compromised. However, in this particular case, Martin McDonagh's witty screenplay makes Seven Psychopaths one of the best black comedies I've ever had the privilege of viewing.
The casting is perfect, as the trio of sadistic, cynical leads share deft humorous moments and Sam Rockwell's bizarre character Billy shines through. Another focal point in the film is the slick and smooth cinematic commentary.
Narration can become tedious at times since it's used so often in film, but the unique way in which it helps craft the plot transcends the local boundaries of the feature. Along with it's quotable dialogue and insightful violence, Seven Psychopaths could have been a cheap Tarantino knock-off, but instead it proves to be a hilarious and gleeful experience.
