Review of Seven Psychopaths (2012) by Anna B — 20 Oct 2014
The comically (probably deliberately) low stakes (just give the dog back!) and convoluted meta-narrative kind of rob the film of some urgency (it's difficult to get a grip on why people are doing what they're doing beyond McDonagh thinking it's funny that he made you think that), and the goofs made at its own expense about women and violence aren't really engaged with beyond the winks, but it's funny and entertaining and the acting's amazing so what the fuck.
Clearly influenced by Kaufman, it doesn't reach the heights of Adaptation, but I suspect it will improve on re-watches.
