Review of Seven Pounds (2008) by Johnny H — 28 Dec 2011
I fully admit that I'm a soft touch when it comes to heart string pulling type movies and the fact Smith does again an amazing job doesn't hurt. In fact seeing Smith doing this kind of movie makes me glad because I always knew that he had these type performances in him after watching him do (though it was entertaining) his cocky "I'm all that and a bag chips" characters he pumped out year after year.
In term of the critique of giving away the ending of the movie, I think it's completely bogus and completely misses the point of the film. I see this movie as being a character study type movie where your watching Smith's character struggle to find a way somehow redeem himself after an event in his past. I see the revelation of his past and end goal not as a twist but simply that, simply revealing the cause and his solution to the event that forever changed his life. I was amazed at watching Smith's character going through something so profound that it effects his every breath which is only interrupted by his getting to know one of the people he is wanting to help (can't remember her name).
