Review of Set It Off (1996) by Allan C — 19 Jul 2012
Solid crime film in the vein of 70s blaxploitation films, but updated for today and with a strong female cast. The action is done well by director by F. Gary Gray and the characterizations and performances by the lead actresses are fine, avoiding what at first I expected to be typical stock characters.
However, for all the films strengths, the film is overlong and the script is somewhat overindulgent in having a few too many subplots and a few too many scenes where the characters are just gabbing. I suppose I don't mind gabbing for the sake of gabbing in say a Quentin Tarantino film, but the dialogue in the film did not seem nearly as clever.
Still, it's a solid film with good action and performances, so it's definitely worth watching.
