Review of Session 9 (2001) by Justin H — 06 Jun 2008
This is a film that is flawed on a variety of levels. Character interactions/motives aren't terribly sensible at times. (The work crew is already on a seriously tight schedule when one of their team goes missing, and somehow they all seem okay with the idea of having long, drawn-out lunches outside...a lot of work/time-related stuff, actually.) The acting isn't the best, and there are a couple of scenes where the terrible choice of music just kills the atmosphere.
Yet somehow, "Session 9" manages to get beyond all that, and become more than the sum of its parts by the end. True, the first half is slow, and a bit of a chore to sit through, but I actually felt a nice, creepy tingle or two once the weirdness started kicking in. And that's a respectable accomplishment from a film with so many pre-existing flaws.
