Review of Session 9 (2001) by Dave C — 28 Oct 2008
Solid thriller with a phenomenal ending. I need to see it a second time, as I feel like this is a movie I will appreciate more upon subsequent viewings.
My main complaint is that it's VERY slow. Nothing happens for a good portion of the movie, and I ended up dozing off during a somewhat crucial scene of the film. I blame the boring plotting, but again, this is something that I see not being much of a problem for me a second time around. Be forewarned going into it - It's slow.
Aside from that, it's real stellar. The movie is as ambiguous as it gets for horror. Is it a ghost story, or is it just a story of insanity? Is it both? Who knows. This is a thinking man's horror flick. It challenges convention and leaves you thinking.
The best part about this movie is just how unsettling it is, even though it predominantly takes place during the daytime. It's extremely effective because of how different it is. It would have been rudimentary at best if it took place at night, but having it take place in daylight makes it all the more interesting.
Session 9 is a well-crafted, if sometimes boring film. Worth a view.
