I tend to like Anderson's films--especially The Machinist--but this one falls short. So much careful time is spent setting everything up: the characters, the back stories etc. But when the final "a-ha" moment is revealed we find that most of what we've been watching has been filler.

The explanation does not satisfy the previously presented story line. Some outstanding scenes of tension, and I like Anderson's way of inserting clues throughout the film and intentionally making the audience assume something "other" than the obvious.

But the payoff just isn't there.
