Finally a true horror film that builds an oppressive and terrifying atmosphere rather than relying on cheap jump scares punctuated by overly-loud orchestra stings. The performances range from good (Mullan, Caruso and Lucas) to average (the rest of the cast).
The eerie nature of the asylum inherently lends itself to horror and this film makes great use of it. Watch it once, in a dark room, with a shoulder to hide your gaze in.
