Though the plot is generously cut from the "put a bunch of dudes in an asylum/haunted prison and watch them go crazy/kill each other/ have a bunch of supernatural shit happen to them cloth, "Session 9" works because Brad Anderson is an excellent director.
The performances are eh and the script trite (but still kind of fun and serviceable), but the way he spins this creepy tale via mise en scene and a hefty dose of claustrophobia and nyctophobia is inspired and necessary for him to make to pull off his next feature, "The Machinist," which is still one of my favorite mind-fuck psychological thrillers.
