There is no real pay-off or conclusion to this movie that makes any sense to its context. The setting, the asylum, ends up having very little to do with the actual twist at the end. The characters are two sheets short of cardboard cut-outs - with petty dramas between them (such as stealing girlfriends and gossiping) to provide a false sense of depth and character development.

If the makers of this movie were out to make a movie that is as bland and inoffensive as possible, they succeeded - it wasn't boring enough to be boring, exciting enough to be exciting. It just kind of was.

The premise is a great idea - the effect of the asphalt on the workers, the eerie and beautifully shot setting. It just ends up sort of turning into a drama that nobody asked for. Attempts to inspire paranoia in the viewers are unsophisticated and the opposite of terrifying.

We all know something's happening, but the movie does not give us clues as to WHAT, until EVERYTHING is revealed towards the end. This defeats the purpose of the attempt at suspense.
