Review of Session 9 (2001) by Patrick B — 12 Jul 2010
I almost feel bad giving this movie such a low rating. It tries so hard to be a good horror film. It goes for the psychological scares, and tries to give the audience an original, thought-provoking ending.
The major problem here, however, is that Brad Anderson just doesn't know how to direct a horror film. There were hardly any moments in this movie that could be classified as scary, or hell, even creepy.
In horror films, the camera should be a huge factor in the scares, and here, the cinematography is just dead and lifeless. It added nothing to the movie. In fact, the cinematography really seemed like it was filmed by a television crew.
It's hard to explain, it just had that TV feel to it. Also, the script itself was a little hit-and-miss and so were the performances. Josh Lucas and Peter Mullan were pretty spot-on, but Brendan Sexton III and David Caruso could have been replaced by some better talent.
Okay, Caruso wasn't bad, he just uttered some lines that sounded really awkward and unintentionally funny. So while I'm personally not recommending this movie, I suggest you keep an open mind about it.
Judging a horror film is very objective, so something that might scare the shit out of one person, might be boring as hell for someone else. So approach it with caution, but if you want to see it, go for it!
