Review of Serpico (1973) by Jason J — 15 Jul 2010
Based on a true story, Al Pacino plays Frank Serpico, a cop in the NYPD who's fed up with seeing so much corruption in the force. When he tries to take on the system and report on what he's seen he comes up against a brick wall in his superiors and then his colleagues all turn against him.
This is one of Pacino's finest performances - as a lonely man, fed up, and driven to the edge. The story is slow paced - starting with Serpico joining the police force and then him moving between departments, his battle to expose his colleagues corruption before ending with his resignation from the force. The plot takes its time, doesn't rush, and lures the audience into the story - pulling us into Serpico's plight and the cops who make his life hell. The atmosphere and grimy dirty look of New York in the 70's as shown by director Sidney Lumet is brilliant. A definite classic 70's movie. Serpico is an amazing tale of one man versus a corrupt system which deserves to be watched by everybody.
