Review of Serpico (1973) by Allen G — 21 Mar 2013
Powerful biopic that would stand alone perfectly well as just an action drama. It doesn't meet conventions and it's honest and provoking approach makes it a memorable piece. On top of this, Pacino gives a strong and uncompromising performance and Lumet's direction adds a style and warmth within the gritty bravado of NYC.
While it's direct approach on the man himself as opposed to an overall view of the issues discussed may seem like a weakness, Pacino's dedication to the role manages to make it a strength. It's from a different time and place but it brings you in to that perfectly and before long it's your world as much as it's Serpico's.
There is the niggling issue that this film just doesn't go far enough, the tension that is built up so superbly throughout just splashes away in the end as opposed to leaving a bruise but that could have compromised the sense of reality in this film so it's an understandable approach.
Certainly a defining film in the cop-drama genre and a memorable biopic too.
