Review of Serpico (1973) by Henry K — 21 Oct 2009
The film has a very honest, realistic feel. The acting is well done but the pacing is very slow, and I like slow paced films.
The trouble is the story is very depressing and I respect what the real Serpico did, but as a film I don't think it worked. Perhaps if the film was a bit longer it might of been better. It has a feeling that something important in the story hasn't been told to us, the audience.
If you examine it closely, even if the events/scenes in the script/film were true to life, most of the scenes repeat itself except with new cops.
The best part of this film is when he teams up with the other 'good' cop/police comissioner. Exploring more of that I think could have made the film better.
IMO, "Prince of the City", a film by the same director is a much better film and I highly suggest watching that after seeing this.
Again, Al Pacino the cop friend and the second girlfriend have some stand out performances but story wise I think something was left out.
Rent before buying.
