Review of Sergeant York (1941) by Sean J — 25 May 2009
I know that this is supposed to be a classic and all, but I couldn't get it to this in the least. It just came off as old war propoganda. "Yeah yeah! God and America are great!" may have worked back in 1941 but it just comes off now as stiff and heavy handed.
I personally felt nothing for the characters or their performances that were trying to show me the purity of ol' timey country life in Tennessee (which looks more like California to me) but I'm just not buying it.
Should have focused more on developing the paper thin characters instead of beating people over the head with their pro-war/god/america message. I also am not a fan of the overuse of dramatic music to emphasize the onscreen drama that happens so often in old films like this.
I guess if I had to say something positive about this, some of the cinematography was nice.
