Review of Serenity (2015) by Amanda C — 15 May 2012
Serenity is Star Wars for the 21st century. It's a high energy, ridiculously entertaining space western with a dark and foreboding undertone. Extremely stylish with snappy dialogue and a great cast Serenity manages what Star Wars didn't.
It's actually objectively a good film, with all of its elements top notch. Serenity isn't just mindless entertainment, it has a story and deals with some dark themes carried over from Firefly.
The heightened style makes the human greed, corruption and self interest that runs through the film that much more starkly real by contrast. Joss Whedon has created a complete world, the good, the bad and the ugly.
It goes beyond its genre conventions to create a film that has something for everyone regardless of their love of science fiction and fantasy.
