Serenity is a fantastic capstone on the TV series it's based upon - so much so that it actually ends up being even better than Firefly. With that said, Serenity would be nowhere close to as good as it is if you don't watch Firefly before it.
You definitely need to watch the 14 series episodes of Firefly before you see Serenity.
